Assembly and use of CHEF grill:
1. Remove all parts of the packaging around and inside the grill.
2. Install the footrests and legs.
3. Place the charcoal box inside the grill housing.
4. Install the lid handle and thermometer (Chef and Chef-XL models)
5. Place the grill on an even and sturdy fireproof surface.
6. Install the shelves (Chef and Chef-XL models)
7. Heat the grill and grates to burn off the industrial oils (approx. 10-15 min)
8. Grease or spray cooking oil on the grill grate and allow it to char.
9. Repeat this procedure 3-5 times so that a protective layer of burned cooking oil forms on the grate.
Grill housing surface treatment: CHEF grills are made of 3 mm thick Cor-Ten steel, which is weatherproof and during some time becomes brownish. If you want to get the surface of the Cor-Ten steel surface become brown fast (a new CHEF is usually the colour of steel or silver gray), we recommend to sprinkle the outer surface of the grill with 1% salt solution, which enhances the rusting process. If you treat the surfaces before the initial burning process, it speeds up the rusting process. Sprinkling has to be performed 3-10 times in order to get some results. Direct sunlight fastens the rusting process. More detailed instructions for the maintenance of the product made of the Cor-Ten steel are added to the package. All instructions are electronically available in the web: www.grillsymbol.com
Maintenance of steel grill grates (Zig-Zag grates)
The grill grates are made of 8 mm carbon steel. Carbon steel is an excellent heat conductor and has therefore good baking properties. During grilling, a protective layer is formed on the surface of the grate, which is the results of fat burning into the pores of the steel. The grate can be cleaned using a strong pan spatula or grill spatula, a steel brush, a scraper – preferably of steel or stainless steel. The grate is always easier to clean when hot, the food waste would separate better. We recommend to clean the grill hot after each grilling and grease or spray the cooled grill grates with cooking oil.
If the grill has not been in use for a long time, the grates are covered with food waste and have not been oiled and look rusty – no need to worry. Rusting is common in steel and particularly in wet conditions. Follow these steps to remove rust from the grate:
1. Heat the grill and let the grates heat up as well.
2. Remove major dirt using a pan spatula or grill spatula – the dirt comes off easily when hot.
3. If the grate is rusty, remove it using a wire brush (a sturdier wire brush can also be used).
4. Once the rust has been removed from the grate surface, grease or spray the grate with cooking oil.
5. The oil burns on the grate and forms a new protective layer.
6. At the same time, food waste burns between and under the grates.
It is best to perform the above operations just before grilling, there is no need to heat the grill separately. Additional time spent is 5-10 min.
If you have a Naked Chef model without lid and keep it under the open sky, it is more likely to rust. To prevent this, we recommend storing the grill in a drier place or buying a lid for the grill as an accessory.
